Back to the Start at the 21st Annual California Youth Court Summit

On June 24th, the University of California, Santa Cruz hosted night one of the 21st Annual California Youth Court Summit with the theme, “Level Up Justice for All.” Our Executive Director, Dr. Jenny Espinoza, was the keynote speaker and emphasized the power of stories and empathy to cultivate understanding.

Our film, Reflections Behind Bars, was hosted at the summit, and after the screening Dr. Espinoza hosted a fireside chat with Markelle Taylor (“26.2 to Life”) and Anthony Ammons (“Q Ball”) who were formerly incarcerated at San Quentin State Prison. Taylor is an avid member of the running community and a passionate advocate for youth and restorative justice programs. Ammons, a former Juvenile lifer, now works as a special project coordinator for the California Attorney General. Both are committed to sharing their stories and rewriting the narrative.

The conversation shed light on early childhood stories, their first instances of police contact, struggles faced at school, as well as bright points from their youth. When asked about what they needed as a child, Ammons said, “I needed a hug.” Taylor uplifted that, “[You need to] know somebody to get what you need” and that people of color are often disadvantaged when it comes to access networks and resources.”

After, attendees had the opportunity to join in the conversation with a Q&A session. Their questions reflected their listening and empathy; students were curious about the intersection between reentry and race, the necessity of role models and how to navigate life without one, taking accountability, and how to find hope. One student asked the panelists to share a takeaway for the attendees to carry with them, Ammons remarked that, “Your voice matters. Speak up,” reminding students of the importance of their stories and needs. Taylor shared, “We are our brother’s keeper,” calling attention to the necessity of community and considering how we treat one another.

Thank you to the California Association of Youth Courts for allowing us to share the power of storytelling with the next generation of changemakers. "He told you exactly what he needs," remarked Ammons after an attendee shared their own story. We are inspired by the youth who attended the summit; their insights, empathy, and curiosity give us hope that the future of transformative justice is in good hands.
